Andrea Lewis Miller, Ph.D.

Dr. Andrea Lewis Miller made history September 1, 2015, when she took office as the first woman to serve as president of LeMoyne-Owen College since its founding in 1862.  As the college’s 12th president, Dr. Miller is only the second alumnus to hold the office.  

Dr. Miller has more than 20 years of experience in higher education with the majority of it serving in administrative capacities. Immediately prior to taking office at LeMoyne-Owen, she served as chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) in Louisiana, and prior to that as chancellor of SOWELA Technical Community College in Louisiana for five years.  She transformed SOWELA from a technical college into a comprehensive technical community college while leading it through its first SACSCOC regional accreditation. SOWELA’s enrollment increased by 67 percent during her tenure.

Dr. Miller also served six years as provost/executive vice president for Academic and Student Affairs at Southwest Tennessee Community College where she was responsible for strategic planning and institutional research.  Prior to her leadership roles at community colleges, Dr. Miller spent several years in academic administration at four-year institutions. She served six years as vice president for Academic Affairs/dean of faculty at LeMoyne-Owen College, and as an assistant dean in the College of Human and Community Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Miller has acquired over $13 million in grants and contracts to support research, curriculum development and professional development activities in science and technology. 

Dr. Miller received her Doctor of Philosophy and master’s degrees in Cell and Developmental Biology from Atlanta University and studied as a post-doctoral fellow at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. She also has spent summers engaged in biomedical research at the Marine Biological Laboratories (MBL), Woods Hole, MA and at Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL), Los Alamos, NM.  She is a Memphis native who is the proud mother of one grown daughter and two grandsons.
